Hot tubs and spas in Corpus Christi must meet the same barrier requirements as pools under Sec. 23-57. Locking safety covers can serve as an approved barrier when not in use.
Under Corpus Christi Code of Ordinances Sec. 23-57 and Texas Health and Safety Code Ch. 757, hot tubs and spas are subject to the same residential barrier requirements as swimming pools. A safety cover that meets ASTM F1346 standards and is equipped with a locking mechanism may serve as an approved barrier in lieu of a full fence enclosure when the hot tub is not in use. Drain covers must comply with the federal VGB Act anti-entrapment standards. Electrical installations require a permit and must include GFCI protection per the National Electrical Code. Hot tubs must be placed on a surface capable of supporting the filled weight and be accessible for maintenance. If a hot tub is installed within an existing fenced pool area, the pool barrier requirements already in place typically suffice. Contact Development Services at (361) 826-3240 for electrical permit requirements.
