Wichita, KS Swimming Pools & Spas: Pool Permits (2026)

Wichita has adopted the International Residential Code (IRC) with state amendments under the Kansas Residential Building Code authorized by K.S.A. 31-150. A building permit is required for any in-ground pool, on-ground pool, or above-ground pool with a water depth exceeding 24 inches. Spas and hot tubs over 24 inches likewise require permits. The application requires a site plan showing pool location, setbacks (typically 5 feet from side and rear lot lines, 10 feet from primary structure), grading and drainage plan, plumbing schematic, and electrical layout. Separate electrical and plumbing permits are required and must be pulled by licensed contractors registered with Wichita. Bonding of all metal components within 5 feet of the pool to a single equipotential grid is mandatory under NEC Article 680, and a final electrical inspection verifies bonding before the pool may be filled. Suction-entrapment-compliant drain covers (VGB Act) are required. The pool barrier and final inspections must be completed before water use. Pools cannot be located over easements or within drainage swales. Wichita does not currently require a separate pool operator certification for residential pools, but commercial and HOA pools require Sedgwick County Health Department approval.
