Bin placement rules in Suffolk County are municipal. Boston requires bins curbside by 5 AM on pickup day and stored out of public view between collections; bags must be under 40 pounds.
Suffolk County has no bin rules. Boston Municipal Code §7-4 (Trash) sets specific placement rules: bins or bags placed curbside no earlier than 5 PM the night before pickup and no later than 5:00 AM pickup-day morning; bins removed from the curb within 24 hours of collection; between pickups, bins stored in a side yard, driveway, or rear yard (not in front). Bags are limited to 40 pounds (32-gallon maximum size). Boston rolled out city-issued wheeled carts in 2022-2025 for many neighborhoods — participating addresses must use the provided cart, which stays curbside for compatible automated trucks. Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop each have similar placement and retrieval rules through their DPW ordinances. Bins blocking sidewalks, driveways, or fire hydrants violate Boston Municipal Code §16-12. Boston Inspectional Services Code Enforcement issues blight citations for bins left out more than 24 hours after pickup. Multi-unit properties are required to provide adequate enclosed bin storage.
Boston bins out past 24 hours: warning, then $50-$100 blight citation under Boston Municipal Code §16-12. Overweight or oversized bags: collection refused. Blocking sidewalk or hydrant with bin: $100 plus removal.
