Daly City, CA Trash & Recycling: Bin Placement Rules (2026)

Under Daly City Municipal Code Chapter 8.12 (Garbage), residents must store garbage and recyclables in approved containers (the Republic Services-issued 32-, 64-, or 96-gallon wheeled carts) between collections and place them at the curb only for pickup. Republic Services guidance asks customers to set carts out by 6:00 a.m. on the scheduled collection day with at least 3 feet of clearance between carts and away from cars, mailboxes, and low-hanging branches so the automated arm can lift them. Lids must close fully — overflowing trash or extra bags beside the cart are not collected and may be tagged. After pickup, carts must be removed from the public right-of-way reasonably promptly (commonly the same evening) so that they are not stored on the sidewalk or in the street between pickup days. Multi-family buildings use shared bins in enclosures; those enclosures must be screened from public view consistent with Daly City zoning and refuse-storage standards. Carts left at the curb between collection days, or stored in a front yard visible from the street, are subject to Code Enforcement action under Chapter 8.12 and the city's property-maintenance provisions.
