Trash and recycling carts must be placed at the curb with wheels against the curb, handles facing the house, and at least 3 feet of clearance on all sides for the automated collection truck arm. Carts may be set out no earlier than 6 PM the night before and must be removed within 24 hours of pickup.
Waste Management uses automated side-loading trucks with a robotic arm that grabs carts from curbside. Proper placement is required for pickup to occur. Place carts on a flat surface at the edge of the street or driveway apron with wheels touching the curb and the cart handle facing away from the street (toward the house). Leave at least 3 feet of clear space on both sides of the cart and overhead (no low branches, parked cars, basketball hoops, or other carts blocking the arm). Do not place carts behind parked vehicles. Do not block sidewalks, fire hydrants, mailboxes, or crosswalks. Carts may be set out no earlier than 6:00 PM the evening before collection and must be returned to a screened storage location within 24 hours after pickup per Reno property maintenance standards. In HOA communities, additional rules may require carts be stored out of view from the street between collections. Overloaded carts (lid not fully closed) or carts containing prohibited items (hazardous waste, hot ashes, concrete) will be tagged and skipped.
Carts left at curb beyond 24 hours: $50-$200 fine. Blocking sidewalks or hydrants: immediate removal required plus fine. Repeated violations: possible loss of service.
