Reno offers single-stream curbside recycling through Waste Management, collected every other week. Accepted materials include paper, cardboard, rigid plastics #1 and #2, aluminum cans, steel cans, and glass (glass requires separate bin in some areas). Participation is voluntary but strongly encouraged.
Reno does not mandate residential recycling participation, but single-stream recycling is included in the standard Waste Management service at no extra charge. Residents receive a 95-gallon recycling cart collected biweekly. Accepted items: cardboard (flattened, clean), paperboard, mixed paper, newspaper, magazines, office paper, aluminum cans, steel and tin cans, rigid plastics #1 (PET) and #2 (HDPE) such as bottles and jugs, and sometimes #5 (tubs). Glass recycling has historically been limited in Northern Nevada due to market conditions; Reno residents may need to use separate glass drop-off bins or a subscription glass service. NOT accepted in the curbside cart: plastic bags and film, Styrofoam, food-soiled paper, pizza boxes with grease, shredded paper (loose), diapers, textiles, electronics, batteries, needles, or hazardous waste. Contamination lowers the value of the entire load and may cause it to be landfilled. Plastic bags clog sorting machinery and should be returned to grocery store drop-off bins. Nevada has no container deposit (bottle bill) law, unlike California.
Repeated contamination of recycling cart: cart may be tagged, not collected, or converted to trash service at customer request. No fines for non-participation.
