Waste Management of Nevada holds the exclusive franchise for residential trash and recycling collection in Reno under a long-term franchise agreement. Service is mandatory for residential properties, with weekly trash and every-other-week recycling pickup in most neighborhoods.
Under Reno Municipal Code Title 7 and the franchise agreement, Waste Management is the sole authorized residential hauler within Reno city limits. All occupied residential properties must subscribe to service; self-hauling to landfills is restricted. Standard service includes a 95-gallon trash cart collected weekly and a 95-gallon recycling cart collected every other week (biweekly). Carts must be placed at the curb by 6:00 AM on pickup day and removed within 24 hours after collection. Lids must close fully; overflowing carts may not be serviced. Collection is suspended on major holidays (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas), with pickup shifted one day later that week. During winter, snow and ice may delay routes; residents are asked to clear a path to the cart. Extra bags outside the cart generally are not collected without purchasing extra service. Bear-resistant carts are available in foothill neighborhoods prone to wildlife issues.
Failure to subscribe to mandatory service: code enforcement citation. Carts left at curb beyond 24 hours: warning then fine. Illegal dumping: up to $1,000 fine plus cleanup costs.
