The Town of Colonie does NOT provide curbside bulky-item collection for the unincorporated Town - the Environmental Services FAQ is explicit: residents must contact their hauler (Allied/Republic 518-785-7030 or County Waste 518-877-7007) for special pickup, OR self-haul to the Colonie Landfill at 1319 Loudon Road (entrance 4 Arrowhead Lane, Cohoes). Residents with a green vehicle sticker can drop yard waste free. The Town also has a small (6-8 cubic yard) roll-off container system for select wastes. The Village of Colonie runs separate heavy-trash pickup May through Fall.
The Town of Colonie's Environmental Services FAQ is explicit on bulky items: 'The Town does not provide a service to pick up old furniture and large items which haulers will not pick up weekly.' Residents in the unincorporated Town have three options. (1) Contact your private hauler - Allied Waste / Republic Services (518-785-7030, 136 Sicker Road, Latham) or County Waste & Recycling (518-877-7007, Clifton Park) - to schedule special bulky-item pickup; pricing is set by the hauler. (2) Self-haul to the Colonie Landfill at 1319 Loudon Road (entrance now 4 Arrowhead Lane via Fonda Road to Green Mountain Drive to Arrowhead Lane). Operated under contract by Capital Region Landfills Inc. since 2011. Landfill hours: Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.; Saturday 7:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon (Oct-May winter) or 7:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. (Jun-Sep summer). Closed Sunday. Self-haulers require a green Town resident sticker placed in the vehicle window (no charge, issued by Environmental Services). Yard waste self-haul is free with proof of residency. Other bulky items (furniture, mattresses, large appliances, construction debris) are charged at the standard landfill tipping rate. Refrigerant-bearing appliances (refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners) require EPA Section 608 freon evacuation under 40 CFR Part 82 before landfill disposal. (3) The Town also has a small 6-8 cubic yard roll-off container system for residents to dispose of select wastes - check with Environmental Services for availability. Electronics drop-off is separate and free at the Residential Recycling Station (Town Landfill site, same hours): computers, keyboards, printers, mice, scanners, VCRs, DVRs, digital music players, converter boxes, receivers, video game consoles. Household Hazardous Waste is NOT accepted at the landfill - HHW Days run by appointment through MXI Environmental Corp. (1-800-742-5542 ext. 109, Mon-Fri 8 a.m.-4 p.m.); pre-registration required, residents only. The Village of Colonie and Village of Menands (incorporated villages within the Town) run separate weekly garbage with heavy-trash pickup from May into the Fall - village residents should consult their village rules. Authority: Chapter 112 (Town); NY ECL Article 27 (state solid waste).
Setting bulky items at the curb without a scheduled hauler special-collection appointment is treated as illegal dumping under NY ECL Β§27-2105 / Β§71-2723 (improper disposal of solid waste, civil penalty up to $7,500 per violation under DEC enforcement). Refrigerators dumped without freon evacuation are a federal Clean Air Act violation under 40 CFR Part 82 (EPA Section 608, penalty up to $44,539 per day per violation, 2024 schedule). Self-hauling to the landfill without a current green resident sticker, or hauling commercial loads through the residential channel, results in turn-away or commercial reclassification. Mixing household hazardous waste into bulky loads is a violation of HHW protocols and may trigger DEC enforcement under NY ECL Β§27-0900 et seq. Inspection Services / Building Department (518-783-2706) enforces visible bulk-item blight under Chapter 62 Art IV with civil penalties of $500/$750/$1,000.
