Gaithersburg offers bulk item pickup by appointment through DPW for single-family homes. Large items such as furniture, appliances, and mattresses require scheduling a separate collection. Electronics, hazardous waste, and construction debris are not accepted in bulk pickup and must be taken to the Montgomery County Transfer Station or designated collection events.
The Gaithersburg Department of Public Works provides bulk item collection for single-family residential properties. Residents must call DPW at 301-258-6370 to schedule a bulk pickup appointment. Accepted items include furniture, mattresses, large household items, and white goods (appliances with or without refrigerant). Refrigerators and air conditioners containing refrigerant may require a certified technician to evacuate the refrigerant before pickup. Items must be placed at the curb on the scheduled date. The city may limit the number of bulk items per pickup and charge a fee for certain items. Construction and demolition debris, tires, automotive parts, hazardous household waste, and electronics (TVs, computers, monitors) are not accepted in bulk pickup. These materials must be taken to the Montgomery County Transfer Station at 16101 Frederick Road, Derwood, or disposed of through county-sponsored special collection events. Montgomery County hosts periodic Household Hazardous Waste collection days for paint, chemicals, batteries, and similar materials. HOA communities may have their own bulk pickup schedules or dumpster days coordinated through the association. Contact DPW at 301-258-6370 for scheduling.
Placing bulk items at the curb without scheduling pickup may result in a property maintenance violation and fines. Illegal dumping of bulk items on public or private property is a criminal offense under Maryland law with fines up to $25,000. Improper disposal of hazardous materials may result in environmental violations.
