Full Breakdown

Section 95-16 of the Haverford Township Code governs bulk waste. The Township provides special refuse collections to residential dwellings for bulk waste, for a fee. Under § 95-14, bulk waste means items which, due to their size, shape or weight, cannot be collected as part of the normal weekly municipal waste collection and require special handling. The definition names household appliances, furniture, vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers, microwaves, play equipment, and box springs and mattresses, and excludes outdoor structures such as sheds or fences.

Scheduling has a hard cutoff. Arrangements can be made online at www.haverfordtownship.org through the online payment prompts, or in person at the Township Administration Building. No request is processed until the appropriate fee has been paid in full. Requests must be submitted online by 10:00 a.m., or in person at the office of the Township Building by 1:00 p.m., on Tuesday in advance of a Wednesday collection. Items must be placed at the curb, and collectors do not enter any property to make collections.

The fee schedule in Chapter A187, amended 12-9-2024 by Ord. No. 3008-24, prints bulk trash collection for 1 to 5 items at $22 per item and a cleanout of 6 to 10 items at a flat fee of $122. The schedule itself is adopted by resolution of the Board of Commissioners and can be amended from time to time.

Some material never goes in bulk pickup. Under § 95-16(B), construction and demolition waste is not collected by the Township and must be removed by owners or contractors through other means, and § 95-14 defines it as lumber, roofing material, sheathing, rubble, broken concrete, macadam, plaster, brick, conduit, pipe, insulation and similar material from construction, demolition or remodeling. Paint is excluded from regular trash under § 95-17(C)(7): separate arrangements for latex paint only are made by calling the Department of Public Works, and all other paints and stains go to specially scheduled Delaware County household hazardous waste events. Commercial establishments and apartment buildings with more than four units are not served and use private contractors.

Violations & Fines

Section 95-22 makes a violation of Article II a summary offense before a magisterial district judge, with a fine of not more than $1,000 plus costs and, in default of payment, imprisonment not to exceed 90 days. Each day a violation continues is a separate offense. Under § 95-17(B)(3)(d) it is a violation to throw, dispose or deposit refuse or recyclables on property other than the property one legally occupies, and § 95-21 declares unauthorized accumulation a public nuisance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I schedule a bulk pickup in Haverford Township?
Request it online at www.haverfordtownship.org with the online payment prompts, or in person at the Township Administration Building. The fee must be paid in full before the request is processed. Items must be at the curb, because collectors do not enter property.
What is the deadline for a Wednesday bulk collection?
Tuesday of the same week: 10:00 a.m. for online requests or 1:00 p.m. for in-person requests at the Township Building, as § 95-16(D) prints. Requests that miss the cutoff are not processed for that Wednesday.
What counts as bulk waste?
Items too large, oddly shaped or heavy for normal weekly collection, including household appliances, furniture, vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers, microwaves, play equipment, and box springs and mattresses under § 95-14. Sheds and fences are excluded.
What does bulk pickup cost?
The fee schedule prints $22 per item for 1 to 5 items and a $122 flat fee for a cleanout of 6 to 10 items. The Board of Commissioners adopts the schedule by resolution and can amend it, so confirm the current amount when paying.
