Schenectady, NY Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Under City Code § 161-21D, "excess residential solid waste or bulky items" is not covered by regular bagged trash collection: each item needs its own sticker before the Department of General Services will take it. White goods such as stoves, dishwashers, dryers and washers are collected once a sticker is affixed, priced under the schedule the Commissioner of General Services publishes. Household furnishings carry a fixed per-item price list written directly into the code: mattresses, beds and couches are $15 each; tables, chairs, outdoor furniture and miscellaneous furniture pieces are $10 each; carpet rolls cut to three feet are $5 per roll; a window air conditioner is $15; a grill is $10.

Any other listed bulky item is billed per the Commissioner's published fee schedule. Stickers cost $5 apiece and are sold at the Bureau of Receipts inside City Hall, plus other Mayor-designated sale points around the City. Every property owner is issued three excess residential solid waste stickers automatically each calendar year, mailed directly to the occupant of the residential collection point, so a household can dispose of up to three qualifying bulky items without an out-of-pocket sticker purchase before needing to buy more. Furniture and household items go out on the regular collection schedule set by the Department once stickered; white goods follow their own department-set schedule.

The rule sits inside the City's Mandatory Recycling Law, Chapter 161, so bulky-item stickering works alongside, not instead of, the separate source-separation requirements for recyclables and yard waste under the same chapter.
