Takoma Park DPW provides scheduled bulk trash pickup for large items that do not fit in standard carts. Residents must call DPW to schedule a pickup appointment. Electronics, appliances with refrigerants, and hazardous waste require separate disposal arrangements through Montgomery County facilities.
Bulk items such as furniture, mattresses, large appliances, and carpet are collected by appointment only through the Takoma Park DPW. Residents call 301-891-7633 to schedule a pickup, and items must be placed curbside on the morning of the scheduled date. A maximum of five bulk items per pickup is standard. Appliances containing refrigerants such as air conditioners, refrigerators, and dehumidifiers require special handling and must have the refrigerant removed by a certified technician or be taken to the Montgomery County Transfer Station. Electronics are accepted during the city's periodic e-cycling events or at Montgomery County drop-off locations. Hazardous waste including paint, chemicals, and batteries must go to the Montgomery County Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off in Shady Grove. Construction debris and demolition waste are not accepted by DPW and must be handled through a private hauler.
Placing bulk items curbside without a scheduled pickup appointment may result in the items being left uncollected and a code enforcement warning. Illegal dumping of bulk waste in public areas carries fines up to $1,000.
