Union County, NC Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Chapter 32, Article I of the Union County Code governs solid waste storage and disposal for the unincorporated county. Section 32-3(a) bars any owner, occupant, tenant, or lessee from letting solid waste accumulate on their property outside the manner the article prescribes, and 32-3(b) sets a weekly removal deadline for ordinary solid waste. Subsection (e) singles out bulky wastes specifically: other than a licensed junk dealer, no one may place or leave bulky items, such as furniture or large discarded household goods, outside a building or dwelling for more than 72 hours.

Companion provisions round out the storage regime: (c) caps ordinary garbage containers at 32 gallons with a close-fitting, fly-tight lid, (d) bars storing refuse in a way that harbors rodents, and (f) requires the door removed from any abandoned icebox or refrigerator left outside where children could access it. For disposal, 32-4(c)(1) lets bulky wastes go to the county sanitary landfill with the landfill manager's prior approval, and residents may also arrange private hauling. Solid waste collectors operating in the county must hold a director-issued license under § 32-6, covering vehicle and container sanitation standards.

This 72-hour rule applies only within unincorporated Union County; Monroe, Indian Trail, Waxhaw, and the county's other incorporated towns enforce their own bulk-item rules under separate municipal codes.
