Brockton, MA Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

Sec. 4 sets Brockton's residential pickup calendar. The Department of Public Works or its contractor collects solid waste and bulky items on a weekly basis, year round, from every household except commercial, industrial and multifamily properties over five units. Recyclables are collected bi-weekly, every other week, also year round, provided the resident stores the material in the containers Sec. 2 requires: barrels or "City of Brockton bags" for trash, and identified recycling bins for recyclables. Households get one free barrel of trash weekly, plus a one-item-per-week limit on bulky items placed at the curb; the city may later charge a bulky-item pickup fee under Sec.

2(d), which must be paid to the city or its agent when the pickup is scheduled. Set-out timing is separately fixed by Sec. on the actual collection day. Chapter 8 funds this service through the trash disposal fee in Sec. 8-9: three hundred sixty dollars per year per dwelling unit, billed quarterly at ninety dollars, though owner-occupants of two- or three-unit buildings can get a forty-percent abatement for a non-rented unit, and residents seventy or older who qualify for Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 59, Section 5, Clauses 17D and 41C exemptions get a full abatement.
