Greenville, NC Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

Section 6-3-22 gives the Director of Public Works authority to set the regular schedule on which garbage, trash and recyclables are picked up from residential property citywide; the ordinance does not fix specific weekday routes itself, leaving that to the Director. Section 6-3-42 backs that schedule with a presumption: every residential unit in Greenville is presumed to receive solid waste collection service, and the corresponding monthly fee is billed automatically. A resident who believes the presumption is wrong, because a unit is vacant or otherwise not serviced, can rebut it and get the fee released or refunded, but only under the rules, regulations, interpretations and policies the City Manager adopts under § 6-3-41(G).

The Director of Public Works or a designee hears and decides those presumption-of-service appeals under § 6-3-42(B). The fee itself is set in the city's Manual of Fees, billed monthly by Greenville Utilities Commission alongside water, sewer and electric charges under § 6-3-41(B) through (D); billing cycles of 26 to 35 days are charged the flat monthly rate, while shorter or longer cycles are prorated at one-thirtieth of the monthly charge per day. Nonresidential and mixed-use units are excluded from the automatic residential presumption and must arrange their own private hauling under § 6-3-41(E).
