Cherokee County, GA Trash & Recycling: Dumpster Rules (2026)

County Code § 14-144, part of the Chapter 14 litter-control division enforced by the County Marshal's Office, sets the operating standards for dumpsters and drop boxes county-wide. Subsection (b) locks a business or multifamily dumpster to licensed users only: dumping household trash into a store's or apartment complex's bin without permission is a separate violation from ordinary littering. Subsections (c) and (d) require every dumpster to have a lid, and that lid must stay closed at all times unless some other method keeps animals and weather from scattering the contents.

Section 14-183(d), in the vehicle-standards division, carves a construction exception into the county's broader ban on parking commercial or heavy equipment on residential lots: a single roll-off bin or dumpster used for a construction, remodeling or demolition project may sit on residential property, but only temporarily, only in step with the job's schedule, and only for construction debris, since the section expressly forbids dumping sanitary waste into it. Newspapers delivered by hand may only be placed on private property under § 14-145, and litter placed anywhere must be secured against wind and rain per § 14-143. Enforcement runs through the marshal's designated dumpster monitors named under § 46-31, who patrol and cite violators directly.
