Lafayette, LA Trash & Recycling: Dumpster Rules (2026)

Lafayette's solid waste chapter treats commercial dumpsters as regulated infrastructure. Sec. 74-50 requires every commercial establishment, institution, school, and other nonresidential structure to use a solid waste container of at least one cubic yard, fitted with closing lids and built for mechanical dumping into a collection truck, unless the public works director approves a different size or design. Waste must be stored and collected from inside that container, nothing may sit on the ground, and the container must stay on the premises being serviced; the director can authorize an off-site location only for structures built before January 1, 1979.

No container may ever be placed on a public street or right-of-way, and the director may order any container moved if it blocks sightlines, obstructs safe traffic flow, or interferes with drainage. Sec. 74-51 layers on a sanitation duty: owners must keep premises clean and contract only with a licensed, properly permitted hauler for solid waste, bulky waste, hazardous materials, tires, and recyclables. Public works backs this with recurring inspections under Sec. 74-52, if a container fails the state sanitary code or is otherwise unserviceable, the owner or lessor gets 48 hours' written notice to clean or replace it before being deemed in violation.

If a container becomes an emergency because of its contents, LCG can direct the owner to remove and dump it at the owner's cost, with no reimbursement owed even for a delinquent tenant. New or renovated commercial construction faces a front-end check too: Sec. 74-53 conditions the building permit or certificate of occupancy on proof the applicant has already hired a collection contractor, disclosed square footage and projected weekly waste volume, and identified where the container will sit, off the public street.
