Full Breakdown
The parish publishes one Solid Waste Holiday Schedule through its Environmental Affairs department, and it covers all residents of Unincorporated Jefferson Parish and the Town of Jean Lafitte who receive the parish's garbage services. That means Metairie, Terrytown and the other unincorporated communities are on this calendar. Cities with their own codes, such as Kenner, Gretna, Harahan and Westwego, run their own collection and are not covered here.
The rule is stated plainly on the page: on the observed holidays there is no garbage collection, and the landfill and drop-off sites are closed or open as the table lists. There is no makeup day for missed garbage collection. Garbage is picked up on your next scheduled collection day, and for several holidays the table prints the shifted day.
For the holiday season of 2026, Thanksgiving Day (Observed) on Thursday, November 26, 2026 reads "Thursday collection will be on Monday" and the landfill and drop-off sites are closed. The Friday after, listed as Thanksgiving Holiday on November 27, 2026, is "Collection as usual" with the landfill open. Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24, 2026 is also "Collection as usual." Christmas Day (Observed) on Friday, December 25, 2026 reads "Friday collection will be on Tuesday," and New Year's Day (Observed) on Friday, January 1, 2027 carries the same Friday-to-Tuesday shift.
The table also lists Mardi Gras carnival days. Lundi Gras Day on Monday, February 16, 2026 is collection as usual, while Mardi Gras Day (Observed) on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 moves Tuesday collection to Friday. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Independence Day and Labor Day in 2026 each shift to a later day in the same way.
The code leaves the calendar to the parish. Section 16-5(a)(4) provides for a minimum of two collections per week on a schedule to be determined by the parish, which is why the holiday shifts live on the department's page and not in the ordinance text. Landfill hours are Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 6 a.m. to noon. Drop-off sites run Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Environmental Affairs is at 834 South Clearview Parkway in Jefferson and answers at 504-731-4612.
Violations & Fines
The holiday schedule itself carries no penalty. Section 16-5(a)(5) bars setting material out at curbside before 4:00 p.m. on the day before the regular collection day, and treats earlier set-out as littering under the Code. Because a holiday can push your pickup back, hold material until the day before the shifted day. Under § 16-5(c), the Department of Environmental Affairs or Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Deputies can enforce the section.
