Detroit provides curbside trash and recycling collection for residential properties through the Department of Public Works. Collection occurs weekly on designated days by neighborhood, with specific rules for cart placement and acceptable materials.
The Detroit Department of Public Works (DPW) provides weekly curbside collection of trash and recycling for single-family homes and small multi-family properties (up to 4 units). Each property receives a city-issued trash cart and recycling cart. Trash is collected weekly; recycling is collected every other week. Carts must be placed at the curb with handles facing the house, at least 3 feet from other carts, mailboxes, and obstacles. All waste must fit inside the cart with the lid closed. Bulk items require a separate pickup request through 3-1-1 or the Improve Detroit app. Yard waste is collected seasonally from April through December. Multi-family properties with 5+ units must arrange private waste hauling.
Trash left outside carts may not be collected and can result in blight citations. Placing carts out too early or failing to retrieve them promptly may result in warnings. Contaminated recycling carts (with non-recyclable items) may not be collected.
