Detroit, MI Trash & Recycling: Recycling Rules (2026)

Detroit's Department of Public Works collects curbside recyclables from residential structures that opt in, using an approved recycle cart supplied by DPW or a licensed private hauler (City Code § 42-4-21). Except on collection days, recycle carts cannot be left in the front yard (§ 42-4-24(b)). On pickup day, owners and occupants must place carts at the curb or berm area no earlier than 6:00 p.m. the evening before collection and remove them no later than 9:00 p.m. the day of collection (§ 42-4-25(b)). Recyclables must be drained of liquid and kept separate from solid waste (§ 42-4-41(b)).
