Broward County Code Chapter 14 sets the operative rules for unincorporated areas only; the 31 municipalities run their own collection contracts. Section 14-65 requires every owner and occupant to have accumulated garbage, rubbish and refuse removed, and bars storing it for more than seven consecutive days unless the person holds a health-department exemption permit. Section 14-66(e) governs curbside timing for regular receptacles: they must be placed neatly to allow convenient passage, never set out more than 24 hours before the regularly scheduled collection, never left more than 12 hours after collection, and never placed in a public street or improved right-of-way.

Section 14-72, the residential recycling rule, mirrors that timing for recycling containers and additionally guarantees one curbside recycling collection per residential unit per calendar week, coordinated with the regular solid-waste route; containers must likewise be off the curb within 12 hours of pickup. Rear-door collection is available only if every adult occupant is disabled and unable to bring materials to the curb, a request has been filed, and the unit already receives rear-door solid-waste service. Multifamily buildings of ten or more units fall under Section 14-73 instead, which requires the owner, landlord or association to contract with a hauler for weekly recycling collection, coordinated with the county's Waste and Recycling Services Division and (per Section 14-74) reported monthly by tonnage.

Contaminated recycling loads trigger a hauler notice under Section 14-71(g); if the contamination isn't corrected, the hauler can collect it as solid waste and bill it at solid-waste rates instead.
