Madison Streets Division provides weekly curbside trash and recycling collection to single-family and small multi-family properties. Set out carts by 7 AM on collection day. Large apartment buildings use private haulers.
The Madison Streets Division operates municipal refuse and recycling collection for properties of eight units or fewer under MGO Chapter 10. Trash collection is weekly, recycling is every other week, and yard waste collection runs seasonally (April through November). Residents must use City-issued wheeled carts placed at the curb or alley with at least 3 feet clearance on all sides and wheels facing the house. Carts must be out by 7:00 AM on collection day and returned within 24 hours after pickup. Overfilled carts with closed lids are not serviced. Properties with nine or more units contract with private licensed haulers. Collection schedules are organized by address on the Streets Division website, and holidays may shift collection by one day. Hazardous waste, electronics, tires, and construction debris are not accepted in regular collection and must go to the Dane County Clean Sweep or drop-off sites.
Improperly set carts, early set-out, late retrieval, or overfilled carts may receive warning tags and ultimately citations under MGO 10.18.
