Tangipahoa Parish, LA Trash & Recycling: Pickup Rules & Schedules (2026)

Tangipahoa Parish runs solid waste collection through a no-bid permit system under chapter 38, article IV of the Code of Ordinances, covering only the unincorporated parish; incorporated towns like Hammond and Ponchatoula run their own service. Only collectors approved by the parish council-president government and holding a TPG Waste Hauler Permit Agreement may operate, and every approved hauler must service all roads and parcels in the unincorporated parish or risk revocation. Section 38-192(4) sets the collection floor: haulers must provide at least once-weekly pickup to every residential unit, with any additional or optional service, such as extra pickups or larger carts, arranged directly between the resident and the hauler; the monthly charge is likewise set by private agreement, not by the parish.

Section 38-193 governs equipment and placement. Collection vehicles hauling garbage, rubbish or other putrescible waste must be enclosed, weathertight, leakproof and built of durable metal. Each collector must supply residents a wheeled container of at least 90 gallons, made of plastic or fiberglass, designed for mechanical, semi-automated or automated dumping, fitted with a tight lid to keep out water and vectors, with a mouth wider than its base. Containers go out at curbside, no more than five feet from the roadway or curb and at least five feet from mailboxes, parked vehicles or other objects; during right-of-way construction, carts move as close as practicable to a point the truck can reach.

Residents also get bulk pickup for up to four large appliances per household per year, plus furniture and similar bulky waste, though CFC-bearing appliances qualify only while the parish landfill still accepts them from the hauler.
