Tangipahoa Parish, LA Noise Ordinances: Amplified Music & Outdoor Sound (2026)

Tangipahoa Parish Code § 32-153(1)a, part of the Article VI sound control provisions codified by Ord. No. 23-21 on April 24, 2023, names amplified and reproduced sound as one of the acts the parish declared to create loud and raucous noise under the section's opening prohibition. The text bars the playing of any radio, phonograph, tape, compact disc, musical instrument or any other machine or device capable of producing or reproducing sound, from a stationary location, in a manner or with a volume that disturbs the peace, quiet, comfort, or repose of persons in any dwelling, apartment, hotel, or other type of residence or in any public place.

The provision does not set a decibel meter reading; it is a disturbance-based standard tied to what a person of ordinary sensibilities would find offensive, the language used in Section 32-153's opening paragraph. Section 32-153(2) then exempts several categories that would otherwise fall under this ban, including school and government functions, mayor-and-council-designated community events such as parades and festivals, and organized athletic or group activities on properties generally used for that purpose. Outside those exceptions, amplified music from a stationary speaker, whether at a residence or a business, in unincorporated Tangipahoa Parish can be cited any hour of the day or night if it disturbs listeners nearby.
