There is no countywide garbage collection service. Municipalities (Aurora, Elgin, St. Charles, etc.) franchise haulers and set collection days; unincorporated residents typically contract privately or through their township. Kane County Code § 15-2(1)(f) does regulate timing in unincorporated areas: it is a nuisance and unlawful to place garbage or trash out for collection more than 24 hours before the scheduled pickup time, and garbage may not be left accessible to animals. In unincorporated areas, up to $500 per day for early set-out or animal-accessible garbage. Municipal collection violations are enforced by the city.
