Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) provides once-a-week curbside trash collection and weekly dual-stream recycling for single-family homes and townhomes in the County collection district. Trash and recycling must be at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on the scheduled collection day, with collections running 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Holiday weeks shift collections to one day later.
Montgomery County DEP administers residential trash and recycling collection under Montgomery County Code Chapter 48 (Solid Waste). The County-provided service area includes most single-family homes and townhouses outside municipal collection districts. Collection schedules can be looked up at montgomerycountymd.gov/depcollectionday. The County operates a dual-stream recycling program: mixed paper in a blue recycling wheeled cart, and glass/plastic/metal bottles/jars/cans in a blue recycling bin. The County also provides up to 5 bulk-trash pickups per year and yard-trim collection. Setout rules: containers at curb by 7:00 a.m. on collection day, removed from the curb by the end of the collection day. Holiday slide schedule pushes all collections on/after a county holiday one day later that week. Customer service: 311 or 240-777-0311.
Setting out trash early (before 6:00 p.m. the night before) or leaving containers at the curb beyond the collection day violates Chapter 48 and is subject to civil citations of $100 first offense, up to $500 for repeat offenses. Contaminated recycling carts may be tagged and not collected; chronic contamination can result in service suspension.
