Gaithersburg provides curbside trash collection for single-family homes through a contract hauler. Trash is collected once per week on a designated day. Residents must use approved containers with lids. Trash must be placed at the curb by 6 AM on collection day and containers removed by midnight. Townhome and condo communities may use private haulers arranged by the HOA.
The Gaithersburg Department of Public Works (DPW) manages residential solid waste services for single-family homes within city limits. The city contracts with a licensed hauler for weekly curbside trash collection. Each household receives a designated pickup day. Trash must be placed in approved containers with secure lids, not exceeding 32 gallons or 60 pounds per container. Plastic bags alone are not accepted and must be placed inside a container. Containers must be placed at the curb or alley collection point by 6 AM on the designated day and retrieved by midnight the same day. Bulk items and appliances require a separate pickup appointment scheduled through DPW. Hazardous waste, electronics, tires, and construction debris are not accepted in regular trash collection and must be taken to the Montgomery County Transfer Station or scheduled special collection events. Townhome communities and condominiums in HOA-managed areas such as Kentlands, Lakelands, and Washingtonian typically arrange trash collection through private haulers under HOA contracts. These communities may use dumpsters or designated collection points rather than individual curbside pickup. Contact DPW at 301-258-6370 for schedule information.
Placing trash out more than 24 hours before collection day or failing to retrieve containers by midnight is a code violation. Containers left at the curb may result in a warning notice followed by fines for repeat offenses. Improper disposal of hazardous materials in regular trash may result in fines and hauler refusal to collect.
