South Gate contracts exclusively with Universal Waste Systems (UWS) for residential and commercial collection. UWS services customers Monday through Saturday, and residents use a three-cart system (black trash, blue recycling, green organics) consistent with California SB 1383.
The City of South Gate has an exclusive franchise with Universal Waste Systems, Inc. (UWS) for solid waste, recyclables, and organics collection. UWS runs routes Monday through Saturday; specific pickup day depends on address (lookup available from UWS at 562-334-3660 or SGCustomerService@uwscompany.com). Effective January 1, 2023, residential customers received new carts in three colors: black for trash, blue for recyclables, and green for organics (food scraps and yard waste). The three-cart program implements California SB 1383, the Short-Lived Climate Pollutants reduction law (Public Resources Code §42652 et seq.), which requires all California cities to divert organic waste from landfills. Customer carts must be set out by the time service begins on the scheduled collection day. South Gate Municipal Code Chapter 5.08 (Sidewalk Cleaning and Maintenance) requires owners and occupants to keep adjacent public rights-of-way free of debris, garbage, rubbish, bulky items, waste matter, hazardous waste, and solid waste — meaning carts cannot leak or overflow onto sidewalks or alleys. To order extra carts, exchange sizes, or report a missed pickup, contact UWS directly.
Failure to subscribe to mandatory franchised waste service, overflowing/leaking carts, or leaving waste in the public right-of-way is a public nuisance under SGMC Ch. 5.08 and subject to code-enforcement citations. Statewide SB 1383 non-compliance (mixing organics into trash) may trigger jurisdictional enforcement after warnings beginning 2024.
