Under California SB 1383, all unincorporated Sacramento County residents must separate organic waste (food scraps, food-soiled paper, yard trimmings) into the green organics cart. Acceptable recyclables in the blue cart include rigid plastics numbered 1-7, aluminum and steel cans, glass bottles, mixed paper, and flattened cardboard. Plastic bags, styrofoam, tanglers (hoses, cords, string lights), and e-waste are NOT accepted curbside. The county is subject to CalRecycle enforcement and may assess fines on haulers and customers for persistent contamination beginning 2024.
Repeated contamination can result in hauler warning notices, surcharges, or removal of the recycling cart. SB 1383 authorizes county fines up to $500 per violation.
