Herndon recycling follows single-stream guidelines collected weekly by the Town. Accepted materials include paper, cardboard, glass bottles, metal cans, and rigid plastics numbered 1 and 2. Plastic bags, film, foam, and food-contaminated items are not accepted and should not be placed in recycling bins.
The Town of Herndon participates in single-stream recycling, allowing residents to commingle paper, cardboard, metal, glass, and most rigid plastic containers in one cart. Materials must be clean and dry to avoid contaminating loads that are shipped to regional materials recovery facilities in Northern Virginia. Accepted items include newspapers, magazines, office paper, cardboard broken down to no larger than 2 feet by 2 feet, aluminum and steel cans, glass bottles and jars of any color, and plastic containers marked with resin codes 1 (PET) and 2 (HDPE). Plastic bags, plastic film, plastic wrap, polystyrene foam (including takeout containers and peanuts), diapers, hoses, string lights, electronics, batteries, and hazardous materials are NOT accepted curbside and can cause the entire truck load to be landfilled if they tangle sorting equipment. Fairfax County operates the I-66 Transfer Station and the I-95 Landfill Complex, which accept household hazardous waste, electronics, and materials not suitable for curbside. Glass, due to contamination concerns, in some regional programs goes to a separate purple bin system, but Herndon currently accepts glass in the single-stream cart. Violations for contamination may result in non-collection with a rejection tag.
