Reedley requires residential recycling through its three-container collection system operated by Mid Valley Disposal. The recycling container accepts commingled materials including mixed paper, cardboard, aluminum and tin cans, glass bottles and jars, and plastics numbered 1, 2, and 5. California SB 1383 mandates organic waste diversion, and Reedley provides a separate organics container for food scraps and green waste.
All Reedley residential accounts receive a dedicated recycling container as part of the city's franchise waste collection service with Mid Valley Disposal. Accepted recyclables include mixed paper, clean flat cardboard, aluminum and tin cans, glass jars and bottles, and recyclable plastics numbered 1, 2, and 5. Materials that do not belong in recycling include food waste, liquids, Styrofoam, plastic bags, aluminum foil, foam containers, and any organics. Contaminated recycling containers may be tagged and left unserviced by the hauler. California Senate Bill 1383 (Short-Lived Climate Pollutants) requires cities to achieve significant reductions in organic waste sent to landfills. To comply, Reedley provides a separate organics container that accepts green waste such as plant matter, tree trimmings, and yard trimmings, along with food scraps including breads, grains, pasta, rice, fruits, vegetables, egg shells, nut shells, cooked meat and poultry, and food-soiled paper and cardboard. Items excluded from the organics container include cacti, succulents, yucca leaves, palm fronds, concrete, dirt, hoses, rope, and 5-gallon buckets. Commercial edible food generators in Reedley are subject to additional SB 1383 requirements under City Code Section 4-1-9 to donate or divert surplus edible food. Businesses must maintain records of their food recovery efforts.
Contaminating recycling or organics containers with prohibited materials may result in the hauler refusing collection and tagging the container for correction. Persistent contamination may lead to service modifications or additional charges. Commercial businesses that fail to comply with SB 1383 edible food generator requirements under Section 4-1-9 may face administrative penalties. Failure to subscribe to mandatory collection service violates Reedley City Code Title 4 Chapter 1.
