Winter Haven's curbside recycling program (single-stream) collects paper, flattened cardboard, aluminum and steel cans, glass bottles, and plastic #1 and #2 bottles in the blue cart. Plastic bags, Styrofoam, food waste, and hoses are not accepted.
Single-stream recycling: rinse food residue out of containers, flatten cardboard, and leave caps on bottles. Accepted: clean paper and cardboard, aluminum/steel cans, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and jugs marked #1 PET or #2 HDPE. NOT accepted: plastic bags (return to grocery store), Styrofoam, plastic clamshells/cups, pizza boxes with grease, paper towels, food waste, garden hoses, propane tanks, batteries, electronics, hazardous materials. Contamination is the leading reason recycling loads are rejected at the MRF and sent to landfill. Polk County residents (black recycling cart) follow Polk County's separate list - call 863-284-4319 for specifics.
Persistent contamination of the recycling cart may result in a Solid Waste warning and possible service suspension. Illegal dumping into recycling carts is enforced under FS Β§403.413 - up to $100 fine for under 15 lbs, escalating for larger volumes.
