Overland Park, KS Tree Protection: Heritage & Protected Trees (2026)

Chapter 7.16 defines trees only by mature height class: large at 50 feet or more, medium between 25 and 50 feet, small at 25 feet or less, and street trees in the right-of-way. There is no heritage, historic, or specimen category and no registry. The Legacy of Greenery Committee is a 15-member advisory tree board handling canopy strategy, Tree City USA programming, and the Approved Street Tree List under 7.16.180. It holds no permitting or designation power. The only size threshold anywhere in the code is Section 18.450.040.I, which requires a development landscaping plan to show trees of 12-inch caliper or larger proposed for removal. That is a plan-disclosure requirement inside development review, not a protected-tree designation.
