WSMC §8.24 protects landmark, heritage, and street trees. Permits are required to modify or remove a tree protected or managed by the City. Removal of a heritage tree requires mitigation through replacement planting or an in-lieu fee.
Landmark trees are designated due to size, species, or historical significance. Heritage trees include certain native oaks and other species above defined trunk-diameter thresholds. Construction projects must enclose protected trees with a 6-foot fence located one foot outside the dripline before any grading, equipment movement, or permit issuance. Trees removed for development must be replaced according to the §8.24 replacement schedule.
Unauthorized removal is enforceable under Chapter 8.24 with replacement and fine; severe violations can include arborist restoration costs.
