Walton County, FL Tree Protection: Parkway Planting (2026)

01(J) of the Land Development Code governs street-frontage landscaping in the South Walton, South Central Walton, and North Central Walton planning areas. Any street frontage along a road classified as a collector or higher, contiguous with or inside a development that requires a development order, must be landscaped: the code requires installation of street trees (canopy species unless overhead utility lines forbid them), shrubs, and vegetative ground cover at a minimum of one tree preserved or planted for every 25 feet of street frontage. Those plantings must sit within a planted area at least ten feet wide, positioned to enhance both the project and the streetscape, and are counted in addition to the landscape buffers and other requirements found elsewhere in Chapter V, so surplus street trees can be credited toward on-site landscaping or buffer requirements.

Once installed, the trees and other street-frontage landscaping must be maintained so they do not block the required sight triangles at driveways and intersections, and the county can require additional plantings within the right-of-way beyond the base one-per-25-feet standard. 01(B) exempts a single-family home or duplex used as a residence from the landscaping chapter, this per-frontage street tree count binds subdivisions, multifamily projects, and commercial development that must go through development order review, not an individual homeowner's yard along the road.
