Boulder produces reclaimed water from its 75th Street Wastewater Treatment Facility for limited irrigation and industrial uses, expanding non-potable supply options as Front Range water demand grows under Colorado Compact obligations.
Boulder Water Utility operates the 75th Street Water Resource Recovery Facility, which produces high-quality treated effluent meeting Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment standards (Regulation 84) for non-potable reuse. Reclaimed water serves designated irrigation, industrial cooling, and construction-dust-suppression uses through dedicated purple-pipe infrastructure where built. The program supports Boulder's water resilience under tightening Colorado River Basin allocations and the Colorado Compact. Direct potable reuse is not currently authorized in Boulder. Permitted reclaimed-water users must follow cross-connection rules to prevent any mixing with potable supply, and signage marking purple-pipe systems is mandatory.
Improper cross-connection between reclaimed and potable systems is a serious violation with mandatory disconnection and potential fines under Colorado Reg 84 and Boulder utility rules.
