WASD operates a reclaimed water program serving select irrigation customers and is investing in advanced treatment to recharge the Biscayne Aquifer, reducing reliance on potable water.
Under federal Ocean Outfall Legislation (FL Statute 403.086) Miami-Dade must eliminate ocean outfall discharges by 2025/2026, driving major reuse infrastructure projects. WASD delivers reclaimed water to designated golf courses, large landscape customers, and selected commercial users; expansion to residential service is limited but growing in some neighborhoods. Reclaimed water cannot be used for drinking, cooking, or filling pools. Future projects will treat reuse water to advanced levels for aquifer recharge to protect drinking water supplies. Customers using reclaimed water still follow conservation rules and cross-connection prevention.
Cross-connecting reclaimed lines to potable plumbing is a serious violation triggering immediate disconnection, mandatory inspection, and Health Department notification.
