Full Breakdown
Linn County's unified development code regulates sheds as detached accessory structures under Sec. 107-94(c)(2). In the RR1, RR2, RR3, USR, USR-MF, VR and VM districts, height tops out at 25 feet. A shed set beside the house needs a 10-foot side setback; placed behind the house, that setback can shrink to 3 feet from the side or rear line, with overhangs kept 1 foot off it. Lot coverage is capped as low as 15% on parcels under half an acre. This applies only to unincorporated county land. Cedar Rapids and Marion enforce separate city codes.
Violations & Fines
Building oversized, over-height, or under-setback sheds can trigger a stop-work order and removal at the owner's expense; the planning and development department handles enforcement.
