Shed permit rules in St. Petersburg, FL β also referred to as storage shed, backyard shed, or accessory building regulations β set size limits, setbacks, and when a building permit is required.
St. Petersburg regulates sheds under Land Development Regulations Sec. 16.50.020 and Sec. 16.60.050, allowing one exempt shed up to 100 square feet and 10 feet tall in side or rear yards.
Sec. 16.50.020 of Chapter 16 governs accessory structures and ancillary equipment, and Sec. 16.60.050 sets allowable encroachments. Single-family lots in any district may have one accessory storage structure such as a pre-constructed shed and one carport that are exempt from the design standards otherwise required for accessory buildings. A shed up to 100 square feet in area and 10 feet in height may encroach into the required side and rear yard setbacks. Larger sheds must meet the principal structure setbacks for that zoning district. Sheds of any size are prohibited in front of the principal structure. On a through lot screened by a five-foot decorative wall or fence, the shed must be set back at least 10 feet from that street property line. Florida Building Code wind standards still apply.
Placing a shed in a front yard, exceeding the 100 square foot exemption without meeting full setbacks, or skipping required permits can result in code enforcement notices, daily fines, and orders to relocate or remove the shed.
