LA County Code Title 10, Division 3, Chapter 10.76 regulates beekeeping in unincorporated areas. Apiaries must be registered with the LA County Agricultural Commissioner. Hive setback requirements and colony limits apply based on lot size.
Chapter 10.76 of the LA County Code regulates apiaries in unincorporated areas. All hives must be registered with the LA County Agricultural Commissioner annually per California Food and Agricultural Code Section 29040. Hives must maintain setbacks from property lines, public rights-of-way, and neighboring dwellings. In residential zones, the number of colonies is typically limited based on lot size. A flyway barrier of at least 6 feet in height is required along property lines adjacent to neighboring properties to direct bee flight paths upward. Water sources must be provided on-site to prevent bees from seeking water on neighboring properties. Africanized bee colonies must be reported and may be destroyed. The LA County Department of Agricultural Commissioner/Weights and Measures oversees compliance.
Failure to register apiaries violates California Food and Agricultural Code Section 29040. Nuisance colonies may be ordered removed. Fines for non-compliance with setback or registration requirements range from $100 to $500.
