Denton does not enforce breed-specific legislation. No breed is banned. TX H&S Code Ch. 822 governs dangerous dog declarations based on behavior.
The City of Denton does not impose breed-specific legislation (BSL). No dog breed, including pit bulls, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, or any other breed, is banned or subject to special restrictions based solely on breed. Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 822 (Subchapters A and D) establishes the statewide dangerous dog framework based on individual animal behavior. A dog may be declared dangerous if it makes an unprovoked attack causing bodily injury outside its enclosure, or commits unprovoked acts in a place other than its enclosure that cause a person to reasonably believe the dog will attack. Dangerous dog owners must register with the local animal control authority, maintain $100,000 liability insurance or a $100,000 surety bond, restrain the dog in a secure enclosure, and comply with signage requirements. Denton Animal Services processes dangerous dog declarations through municipal court hearings. Dogs that cause serious bodily injury or death may be declared dangerous and ordered humanely euthanized after due process. All dogs over 4 months of age must be registered with Denton and carry current rabies vaccination per Chapter 6.
Dangerous dog violation: Class C misdemeanor, fine up to $500. Unregistered dangerous dog: criminal offense under TX H&S Code 822.005.
