Aurora allows up to 8 hens on residential lots β no roosters. Coops must be at least 15 feet from any dwelling on an adjoining lot, kept clean, and pass a city inspection. A small livestock permit is required.
Aurora City Code Section 14 allows residents to keep up to 8 female chickens (hens) on single-family residential lots with a small-livestock permit. Roosters are prohibited citywide due to noise. Coops must provide a minimum of 4 square feet per bird and be located at least 15 feet from any dwelling on an adjoining lot and out of the front yard. Coops must be kept clean, odor-free, and predator-proof. Slaughtering of animals on residential property is prohibited. Hens must be enclosed at all times; free-ranging is not allowed in most zones. Larger livestock (goats, sheep, cattle, horses) are limited to agricultural-zoned lots typically of 1 acre or more. Beekeeping requires a separate permit. Application is through Aurora Animal Services.
Unpermitted flocks, rooster possession, or unsanitary coops result in a compliance notice and citation. Fines range from 50 to 500 dollars per violation.
