Aurora requires all dogs off the owner's property to be on a leash no longer than 10 feet under control of a person capable of restraining the dog. Retractable leashes are allowed only when locked at 10 feet or less.
Aurora City Code Chapter 14 mandates that any dog off its owner's property be on a leash not exceeding 10 feet held by a person able to control it. Voice-control and off-leash walking are prohibited on public streets, sidewalks, trails, and in most parks. Aurora operates designated off-leash dog parks where leashes can be removed within posted boundaries. Tethering a dog outside unattended for more than 2 hours or in unsafe conditions is prohibited under Colorado state law (Colorado Pet Animal Care and Facilities Act). Owners must immediately pick up and dispose of pet waste on public and private property. Violations of the leash law are common grounds for citation during complaint response.
Leash violations are enforced by Aurora Animal Services and start around 100 dollars for a first offense. Dogs running loose can be impounded with reclaim fees.
