Unincorporated San Diego County allows chickens and livestock based on zoning and lot size per the Zoning Ordinance animal schedule (Section 3000 series). Agricultural zones allow various livestock. Residential zones have limits based on lot area. Roosters are subject to noise ordinance provisions.
The County Zoning Ordinance Section 3000 series establishes an Animal Schedule that specifies the number and type of animals permitted per legal lot based on zoning designation and lot size. Agricultural zones (A70, A72) generally allow a wide range of livestock including horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and poultry. Rural residential zones allow limited livestock with setback requirements. Higher-density residential zones limit or prohibit livestock. The number of animals is per legal lot. Roosters are not specifically banned but are subject to the noise ordinance. Animal keeping areas must be maintained in sanitary condition per Section 62.668. Setback distances from neighboring dwellings apply to animal enclosures.
Exceeding animal limits or maintaining animals in unsanitary conditions may result in citations from County Animal Services and Code Compliance. Animals may be required to be removed.
