Galloway Township regulates keeping of chickens and fowl through its animal and zoning provisions. Fowl may not run at large off the owner's premises, and larger-lot and agricultural properties have historically kept flocks. A 2016 push to formally cap backyard hens sparked debate but keeping is tied to lot size
Township Code Ch. 107 bars fowl from running at large unattended off the owner's premises. Poultry keeping is otherwise governed by zoning district (agricultural and larger residential lots accommodate flocks) and by nuisance/health provisions on odor, cleanliness, and coop upkeep. In October 2016 the Township Council debated a formal cap β proposed at 16 chickens per acre and 8 per half-acre, hens only (no roosters), a $20 annual license, and 180 days to reduce excess birds β but the measure was sent back to committee for revision. Residents keeping chickens should confirm current zoning-district allowance and setback rules with the Zoning/Construction office before starting a flock.
Allowing fowl to run at large off your premises is punishable under the Township animal code by fines up to $2,000, up to 90 days imprisonment, and/or up to 90 days community service. Health/nuisance violations are separately abatable.
