Pembroke Pines, FL Animal Ordinances: Chickens & Livestock (2026)

Under Pembroke Pines Code of Ordinances § 155.510, domesticated livestock (cattle, horses, sheep, goats, pigs, and hogs) and domesticated poultry (chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, and other domestic fowl) are allowed only under a specific set of numeric limits and separation requirements. The city restricts the number of grazing animals to four per 35,000 square feet of lot area; where a lot exceeds 35,000 square feet, one additional horse is allowed for each additional acre. Any roofed shelter for horses or cows must sit at least 50 feet from a plot line, and the animals themselves must be kept at least 50 feet from any street line. Barns, feed lofts, and stables built for general livestock keeping must stay at least 100 feet from any lot line, though a stable housing four horses or fewer can be as close as 50 feet from a side or rear lot line.

Poultry keeping is capped at 25 birds total, kept in an enclosure set back at least 50 feet from any plot line. Pens, coops, feeders, and similar poultry structures generally must stand at least 100 feet from any lot line, but the code grandfathers structures that existed before the LDC's effective date: additions and replacements can hold that same pre-existing distance if the original building permit was issued before January 1, 1962, and construction had actually begun by that date. Hog keeping is treated far more strictly: pens, sties, and feeders for hogs must be set back 200 feet from any lot line, and the hogs themselves cannot be kept within 100 feet of a lot line, within 500 feet of a dwelling under different ownership, or within 500 feet of any residentially zoned property.
