Pottstown, PA Animal Ordinances: Chickens & Livestock (2026)

Section 201, Keeping of Pigs and Other Farm Animals Prohibited, sits in Chapter 2, Part 2, Keeping of Certain Animals, and reads as a flat ban rather than a licensing scheme: no person, partnership, firm or corporation may keep a pig or any other farm animal within the limits of the Borough of Pottstown. The section defines farm animals broadly and by name, including donkeys, cows, horses, sheep, fowl such as ducks, geese, chickens and roosters, and goats, so there is no size or backyard-flock carve-out the way some municipalities allow a handful of hens.

An editor's note to Ordinance 2057 (January 12, 2009) records that the Borough Manager, working with the Police Department and the Code Enforcement Office, may set reasonable rules for enforcing and permitting animals under this Part, but the underlying prohibition on farm animals and fowl itself carries no exception in the text. Related sections in the same Part require that any animal kept outdoors, and any odor from animal or fowl keeping, stay within the shelter and sanitation standards of Section 203 and Section 204, which apply Borough-wide to whatever animals are lawfully kept.
