In early 2026 Redlands adopted Ordinance No. 2999 allowing backyard hens (and rabbits) in most single-family residential zones, scaled by lot size, with roosters prohibited for noise. Other livestock and fowl require a permit from Animal Control under Municipal Code 6.24.010.
Historically, hens were largely limited to Redlands' rural/estate and agricultural zones. The Redlands City Council introduced Ordinance No. 2999 (with Resolution No. 8747) on February 5, 2026 to allow backyard hens and rabbits in most single-family residential zones. As reported by the City and local coverage, the number of hens is tied to lot size: no hens on lots under 4,000 square feet, up to three hens on lots of about 4,000 to 7,200 square feet, and up to nine hens on larger lots. Roosters are not allowed, citing noise. Coops must meet setbacks (reported as 5 feet from side/rear lines, 15 feet from a street-side setback, and 10 feet from the main residence, with a minimum 10-by-20-foot outdoor yard area), and a minimum lot of about 4,000 square feet is required. No Animal Services permit is required for the allowed hens, slaughtering on residential property is prohibited, and incidental egg sales must follow California Department of Food and Agriculture rules. For other livestock, fowl, or nondomestic animals, Municipal Code 6.24.010 makes it unlawful to keep them within the city without first obtaining a permit from the animal control bureau or chief of police. Larger animals are generally tied to the rural/agricultural and R-R-A zoning districts.
Keeping a rooster, exceeding the hen count for your lot size, slaughtering poultry on a residential lot, or keeping other livestock or fowl without the permit required by 6.24.010 are code violations subject to Animal Services enforcement, abatement, and fines.
