Ridgewood prohibits dogs from running at large; loose dogs are impounded, owners are notified, and unredeemed dogs may be disposed of after seven days.
Chapter 105 of the Ridgewood Code addresses dogs running at large. Captured dogs are taken to the animal pound. If the dog wears a current license tag, the owner is notified personally or by mail at the last known address. Owners have seven days to redeem the dog. If the dog is not redeemed, or if no notice can be given after seven days of detention, the pound keeper may dispose of the dog humanely. Any dog running at large that acts viciously or shows signs of rabies may be destroyed by police without capture. All dogs over seven months must be licensed within ten days of acquisition.
Allowing a dog to run at large can result in impoundment fees, fines, and loss of the dog if not redeemed. Failing to license a dog is a separate violation.
