Cook County regulates exotic and dangerous animals under Chapter 10 and Illinois Dangerous Animals Act (720 ILCS 585). Large carnivores, primates, and venomous reptiles are restricted. Permits may be required for non-traditional pets.
The Illinois Dangerous Animals Act (720 ILCS 585) restricts ownership of inherently dangerous animals including large cats (lions, tigers, leopards), bears, primates, and venomous reptiles statewide. Cook County Chapter 10 (Animals) provides additional local regulations. The Herptiles-Herps Act (510 ILCS 68) regulates reptile and amphibian ownership. Exotic animal owners may need permits from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Cook County Animal and Rabies Control enforces local animal regulations in unincorporated areas. Common pets like dogs, cats, and small caged animals are generally permitted. Ferrets are legal in Illinois (unlike some states). The keeping of wild or exotic animals that pose a threat to public safety is prohibited without proper licensing.
Illegal exotic animal: Class C misdemeanor under 720 ILCS 585. Animal seized. County fine of $100β$1,000 for ordinance violations.
